CROSS COUNTRY: Sullivan, Thurston dominate

SALEMBURG -- Defending Carolina 1-A Conference individual champions Austin Sullivan and Haley Thurston continued their season-long domination Tuesday afternoon at Lakewood High School.
Sullivan claimed the boys' portion of the race with a first-place time of 17 minutes, 5 seconds -- 65 seconds faster than Princeton teammate and runner-up Brent Hurst.
Rosewood's Cameron Smith (19:06) and Hayden Maldonado (19:12) completed the 5k course in third and fifth place, respectively. North Duplin's Chase King (19:27) claimed ninth and Spring Creek's Levi Miller (21:19) took 10th.
Hobbton and Princeton tied with 17 team points.
Thurston, a senior at North Duplin, bested Hobbton's Ashley Hinterleiter by 18 seconds in the girls' race. Thurston turned in a time of 21:01.
Rosewood's Elaina Amy secured third place in 23:24. Thurston's teammate, Kendy Rangel, placed fourth in 23:26. Esmerelda Perez (25:01) and Joanna Flores (25:15) finished among the top nine for North Duplin.
Rebecca Fitmaurice complimented Amy with a 10th-place effort of 25:31.
Spring Creek teammatess Noelia Ortiz (29:05) and Mirna Santiago (29:25) seized 19th and 20th overall.
North Duplin claimed the team win with a 12-13 decision over Hobbton. Rosewood secured third place with 29 points.
