Southern Wayne 3, Southern Nash 2
* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne tallied the final five points of the decisive fifth set and handed Southern Nash a 17-25, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11 defeat.
"What a nail biter!" first-year SW head coach Jamie Williams exclaimed. "It was back and forth. The girls really rallied together to keep each other up and they fought to the end."
Williams cited the play of Alexus Elliott, Faith Gurley, Macayla Tyndall, Daylan Wiggs and Emmony Jones. Jones' strong serving capped the Saints' road win,
Southern Wayne (1-5 overall) returns to action today at Spring Creek.
Girls' tennis
Goldsboro 5, Princeton 4
* Goldsboro prevailed at No. 3 doubles and turned back Princeton, 5-4, in a non-conference match contested Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars' sophomore tandem of Rachel Johnson-Crystal Golden stopped the Bulldogs' Katherine Leslie-Lauren Lawhon 10-4.
Sophomore Hannah Williamson, Anna Prezbindowski, Johnson and Golden each won their respective singles match. Prezbindowski, who was a state qualifier in swimming last winter, pulled out a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 3 singles. Golden triumphed 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (13-11) at the No. 6 flight.
Princeton collected wins from top-seeded Emily Shallington and fourth-seeded Jasmine Rubio, who won 6-4, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (10-7) at No. 4 singles.
The Dogs' teams Shallington-Mackenzie Evans and Cailiee Vetrano-Rubio won in doubles.
JV
* Volleyball: Southern Nash d. Southern Wayne 25-18, 10-25, 15-12 -- The Saints scored consecutive 12 points with Allie Gurley and seven straight with Mackenzie Bryant at the line -- both in the second set. "We may have lost by looking at the scorebook, but we left the gym with a win by playing with heart," first-year SW head coach Jamie Williams said. The Saints (0-5 overall) travel to Spring Creek today.
