PIKEVILLE -- Unthinkable.

Charles B. Aycock surrendered five runs in the top of the seventh inning, failed to reply in their half and fell to South Johnston, 8-6, in second round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs Saturday evening.

It was the final game in Pikeville for seven Aycock seniors.

"That's tough," CBA skipper Charles Davis said, "we played pretty well today. The game of baseball can be cruel sometimes. They did a great job of hitting and squaring some balls up."

Too many, specifically, in a shocking final frame -- one that saw the visitors connect time and again versus seasoned Aycock pitching. CBA reached second in its half, but lined out to right field for the game's final out.

" It's disappointing for our seniors, especially since one of them is my own... but you've got to tip your cap to the other team."

South Johnston, now 16-8 overall, will face the winner of Hillsborough Orange-Wilson Hunt next Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons finished the season with a 21-5 record.
