SEVEN SPRINGS -- The battle, staged in three acts, is complete.
Spring Creek (19-6 overall), twice delayed in the past week due to inclement weather, resumed play and upended rival Rosewood, 2-0, in N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A baseball playoff action Saturday.
Sawyer Smith and Will Rouse combined to secure victory for the Gators. The duo allowed just five hits over 23 at-bats, and struck out four.
The game was decided in the sixth inning, when the Gators turned two doubles into a pair of runs. Despite a leadoff single in the final frame by Rosewood's Tanner Bradley, the Eagles could not cross a run against the live arm of Rouse, who tossed 32 strikes in a 50-pitch effort.
"Our guys just kept finding ways to win," coach Heath Whifield said.
Spring Creek will face Princeton -- another Carolina 1-A foe -- in the third round. The game is scheduled for Tuesday.
Rosewood finished the season with a 16-10 record.
