TRENTON -- Spring Creek fell victim to Jones Senior, 13-2, in second-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A softball playoffs Friday afternoon.
The visiting Gators opened their half of the game with an RBI double from Mikayla Starnes, but found subsequent runs scarce against a team hosting its first-ever postseason softball clash.
"To size up the game," head coach Lester Boltinhouse said, "(we) didn't make the routine defensive plays that would've gotten us out of innings early."
And the contact-hitting Trojans took advantage.
On numerous occasions, the hosts loaded the bases to create a carousel around the base paths. At the end of one inning, Jones led 10-2.
Following four more innings of evenly-contested play, the Gators' season ended via the mercy rule.
"Ivey (Rouse) pitched a great game," Boltinhouse said, " she really did. Just didn't get much help from the defense."
It was the second consecutive playoff appearance for Spring Creek, who received hits from Ashley Marriner, Ahshari Robinson, Daisy Martinez and Starnes.
The Lady Gators finished the season 8-12 overall.
