GREENVILLE -- Eastern Wayne turned a season-high three double plays and fended off J.H. Rose, 2-0, in an Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference game Tuesday evening.
The third DP occurred during the Rampants' final at bat. Tanner Wells exited with one out on the scoreboard and Zack Smith threw just three pitches in relief. The third led to the twin-killing and ended Rose's hopes of extending the Warriors' losing streak to four games.
Wells yielded nine hits in 6 1/3 innings and logged one strikeout.
"That was a big win on the road," said EW head coach Jabo Fulghum, whose pitchers allowed nine hits. "Wells threw extremely well. It looks like on paper we should have been beaten. We were flexible on defense, but never collapsed. We played with some intensity and never panicked."
Ryan Warren connected an RBI single in the first inning.
Lee Daniels pushed across the second run when the Rose pitcher plunked him in the back with the bases loaded.
Warren, Smith and Wells each batted 1-for-3.
The Warriors, who are 13-6 overall and 8-1 in road games this season, return home Friday to face league-leading D.H. Conley.
