UMO: Softball sweeps Barton

WILSON -- University of Mount Olive capped regular-season play with a doubleheader sweep of Conference Carolinas softball archrival Barton on Wednesday afternoon.

The Trojans won 9-2 and 9-0.

Madison Johnston hurled a six-hitter and struck out six in the opener.

Kelsey Akers emerged as the offensive leader with three hits and an RBI. Kayla Allen and catcher Anna Ingram collected two hits apiece. Ingram, Callie Ferrell and Caitlin Ewers each drove in two runs.

Julie Hodges tossed a complete game one-hitter during the nightcap, which ended via the eight-run mercy rule. She recorded two strikeouts.

Kristin Power batted 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ingram finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Akers, Savannah Becker, Allen, Ewers and Brooke Kamphuis each had one hit.

Mount Olive (30-18 overall, 16-6 CC) won for the 15th time in its last 18 outings. The Trojans return to action in the season-ending Conference Carolinas tournament, which begins April 28 in Burlington.

Baseball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Zak Orrison drove in five runs and Jack Sherrill added three RBI during University of Mount Olive's 16-2, non-conference thrashing of Chowan University at Scarborough Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Chowan won 8-4 on Tuesday.

Sherrill, Stephen Wallace, David Mayo and Ricky Surum (two RBI) each had two hits.

Mount Olive plated 15 runs during a three-inning stretch.

Winning pitcher Ethan Horne (1-1) worked six innings and surrendered an unearned run on six hits. He fanned three Chowan batters.

North Duplin graduate Trey Pate and Nick Mason combined for three innings of two-hit, four-strikeout relief.

The Trojans (24-17 overall) snapped a two-game skid and return to action at home against Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey. Weather permitting, the teams will play a single game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.

Men's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 5-ranked University of Mount Olive scored the final three goals and pulled away from No. 19-ranked Queens University of Charlotte, 14-8, at Amon Field on Wednesday evening.

Nico Shewey paced the Trojans' offense with four goals. Luke Morris, Matt Shields and Thatcher Clark each found the back of the net twice. Shields, Jacob Ball and Ryan Morris each had one assist.

Keeper Ross Bowman posted 11 saves between the pipes.

The Trojans (12-2 overall) conclude regular-season play Saturday at two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Limestone (S.C.) College. Face-off is 1 p.m.
