GREENSBORO -- University of Mount Olive's John Thatch emerged as the 2016 Conference Carolinas men's individual championship in playoff fashion during the season-ending tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
Thatch birdied four of the first nine holes, made an eagle on the 11th hole and birdied consecutive holes on the back nine for a final-round 66. It matched the lowest third-round scored in UMO history.
The sophomore faced Belmont Abbey's Nick Stafford in the playoff. Each parred the 18th hole. Thatch birded No. 1 to clinch the title outright.
UMO finished third in the team competition with a three-day total of 886 -- 28 strokes behind Limestone (S.C.) College.
