MOUNT OLIVE -- Trees and water gave some golfers fits.

But six high school teams managed to enjoy the greens and the sun at the Southern Wayne Country Club on Thursday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne's Drew Grady and Charles B. Aycock's Ty Daniels shared medalist honors with a 79. Rosewood, meet host Southern Wayne, Wayne Country Day and Princeton also participated.

"I hit a lot of fairways off the tee, and my iron shots felt crisp and solid," Grady said.

The fairway on the seventh hole presented problems for golfers as they attempted to work around the trees on the left-hand side. Limbs and trunks deflected several shots for the golfers, who also had to carry their shots over the water onto a small green.

Water swallowed two shots from Wayne Country Day's Charlie Roethling, but he said he would soon "forget" about the challenges on hole No. 7 and continue forward.

Some greens seemed to tilt for golfers who took several putt attempts. Daniels, on the other hand, prevailed with limited putts.

"I hit drives where they needed to be, my chips where they needed to be and my putts just fell in," he said.

Aycock won the team portion with a four-player score of 335.

"Very proud of Ty Daniels today," Golden Falcons head coach David Elmore said. "He played well."

Rosewood had a 342 team score. Eastern Wayne picked up a 347. Wayne Country Day (371), Princeton (386) and Southern Wayne (434) rounded out the field.

Rosewood's Jeremy Mercer shot an 80, CBA's Mitchell Langston shot an 82, Rosewood's Andrew Ingram shot an 86 and CBA's Bryce Jones shot an 87.

Eastern Wayne's Nathan Coker, Wayne Country Day's Mitch Debowski and Rosewood's tandem of Dylan Champion and Dylan Greene each shot an 88.

Aycock, Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne meet again Monday afternoon at Lane Tree Golf Club. The trio will conclude regular-season play in the annual Cookout Classic, scheduled for next Wednesday at Goldsboro Municipal GC.
