GREENVILLE -- Three hits and three uncharacteristic defensive miscues enabled J.H. Rose to emerge victorious 5-0 and knock Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe Charles B. Aycock from the unbeaten ranks on Friday evening.
The Rampants, who scored an unearned run in the second inning, broke loose in the sixth inning. Three hits -- coupled with a walk, a hit batsman and an error -- led to a five-run outburst.
"They took advantage of our mistakes," CBA head coach Charles Davis said. "They turned the tables on us last night because that's how we had been winning so far this year."
Aycock (14-1 overall, 4-1 ECC) couldn't solve Rampants pitcher Matt Vurne. He scattered four hits and retired seven Golden Falcons on strikeouts in a complete-game performance.
Chandler Matthews scratched out two hits. Jacob Sanford doubled and Ashton McGee had one hit.
"The Vurne kid was good on the mound," Davis said.
Sanford surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits and sat down eight Rampants on strikeouts for the Golden Falcons. Kyle Davis tossed one inning of two-hit relief.
The Golden Falcons return home Tuesday to face county archrival Eastern Wayne. First pitch is 6 p.m. at Charles Davis Field in Pikeville.
"This conference ... everybody is pretty dog-gone good," coach Davis said. "We'll see what will happen then. There is plenty of baseball left to be played."
