UMO's Kingston connects on game-winning goal with 1 second left

WINGATE -- Brett Kingston notched the game-winning goal with 1 second left, and No. 15-ranked University of Mount Olive upended in-state region rival Wingate, 9-8, in men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.

Nico Shewey delivered two goals 59 seconds apart to ignite the Trojans' improbable comeback. Jacob Ball picked up a ground ball with five seconds left in regulation and handed it off to Kingston for the thrilling finish.

Wingate fell to 0-4.

Ball and Austin Whitlow paced the UMO offense with three goals apiece. Kingston and Matt Shields each provided one assist.

Goalie Rocky Bowman logged eight saves.

The Trojans (5-1 overall) return to action Sunday against No. 2-ranked Le Moyne College in Baltimore, Md. The non-conference match is hosted by Johns Hopkins University, which advanced to the NCAA Division I Final Four last season.

Men's volleyball

LIMESTONE , S.C. -- Peyton Schirman recorded 19 kills, including match point, as University of Mount Olive defeated Conference Carolinas foe Limestone 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-10.

Bret Rutledge triggered a 4-0 run with a kill and a service ace on back-to-back points, which put the Trojans in command, 10-4, in the final set. Kills by Schirman, Kian Hollovoet and Andrew Sydow gave UMO match point at 14-9.

After a Limestone sideout, Schirman's third kill of the set sealed the road win.

Rutledge and Mike Mann posted eight kills apiece. Jeff Yasalonis dished out 50 assists. Sydow logged a match-high six blocks and Ryan Thomas emerged as the defensive leader with 16 digs.

Mount Olive (8-4 overall, 7-3 CC) returns to action this weekend at Penn State University. The Trojans face No. 1-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday, and play Cal State-Northridge the following day.

Tennis

MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 40-ranked University of Mount Olive turned back in-state rival Chowan University, 7-2, on the Walker Tennis Center courts.

The Trojans emerged victorious in all three doubles matches and took four singles points to secure their fifth win of the season.

UMO visits No. 5-ranked Lander (S.C.) University today. It's a rematch of last year's opening-round battle in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

On the women's side, Jennifer Byrd accounted for both Trojans' points in singles and doubles play during a 7-2 loss to Chowan.

Byrd and doubles mate Paulina Delgado squeezed out an 8-7 win at the No. 2 slot. Byrd also prevailed in straight sets at No. 5 singles.

The Trojans (2-4) visit Lander (S.C) University today.
