Wayne Christian recognizes winter sports athletes

Athletes in eight sports were recognized for their achievements during Wayne Christian's winter awards ceremony conducted Friday evening inside Clifford Gymnatorium.
Four Eagles garnered all-Carolina Christian 1-A Conference accolades in basketball. Tyrique McClain was a first-team pick and Darrian Oates was a third-team selection on the boys' side. Kasey Norris (second team) and Abi Harrelson (third team) represented the girls.
McClain also earned a nod on the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A all-state team. He helped lead the Eagles to 16 wins and their first postseason trip since 2007.
The awards breakdown:
* Middle school girls' basketball: Most Improved -- Payton Jackson; Coach's Award -- Madison Wells; Christian Leadership -- Olivia Sutton; co-Most Valuable Player -- Victoria Harrell and Brianna Verme.
* Middle school boys' basketball: Most Improved -- Justin Ashford and Christopher Atkins; Coach's Award -- Jaylon Wallace; Christian Leadership -- Elijah Anderson; Defense Award -- Kevin Baker; MVP -- Blake Tinker.
* Middle school cheerleaders: Most Improved -- Annalise Fitzmorris; Coach's Award -- Sarah Brogneaux; Christian Leadership -- Kaitlynn Taylor; Spirit Award -- Natalie Rheingruber.
* JV boys' basketball: Most Improved -- Junior Tabe; Coach's Award -- Gavin Wiley; Christian Leadership -- Logan Jackson; Defense Award -- Jeremy Bentley; MVP -- Jaxon Anderson.
* Varsity girls' basketball: Most Improved -- Holly Gurley and Ashlee Harrelson; Coach's Award -- Abi Harrelson; Christian Leadership -- Emily Wells; Most Rebounds Award -- Adayah Ginn; MVP -- Kasey Norris.
* Varsity boys' basketball: Most Improved -- Austin Kornegay; Coach's Award -- Mason White; Christian Leadership -- Brandon Johnson; Co-MVP -- Ty McClain and Darrian Oates.
* Varsity swimming: Most Improved -- Maddox Johnson; Coach's Award -- Hunter Burt and Ricky Grady; Christian Leadership -- Stephen Whitfield; Hardest Working Swimmer -- Paige Court; MVP -- Anna Rendall.
* Varsity cheerleaders: Most Improved -- Anna Pender; Coach's Award -- Jordan Anderson and Tori Hans; Christian Leadership -- Kaylin Darden; Initiative Award -- Chelsea Toler.
