UMO: Men, women pick lacrosse wins

MOUNT OLIVE -- Matt Shields' steal and early fourth-quarter goal broke an 8-8 tie and No. 11-ranked University of Mount Olive turned back Rollins College, 11-8, on Sunday afternoon.
Shields and Nico Shewey each finished with three goals and an assist.
The Trojan stickmen twice rallied from two-goal deficits. Shields' strike put UMO in front 9-8 with 10:21 remaining in regulation. Shewey scored 41/2 minutes later and Luke Dalman provided a man-advantage goal to make it 11-8.
Keeper Ross Bowman logged 12 saves between the pipes.
Mount Olive (2-0 overall) entertains Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday. Face-off is 2 p.m. at Amon Field. The Trojans will play host to in-state conference and Southeast Region nemesis Pfeiffer University on Saturday.
Women's lacrosse
WINGATE -- Claire Wigler connected on the game-tying goal with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation, and assisted on Candace Corkin's game-deciding goal in a 6-5 triumph over in-state rival Wingate University.
Wigler scored with 11:56 on the clock. Corkin took a pass from Wigler and punched in the game-winner with 8:10 to go.
Alysha Kulka emerged as the offensive leader with three goals.
Brittany Barron led the UMO defense with three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Stockstad provided two draw controls and caused a turnover.
The Trojan women (4-0 overall) return home Saturday for a Conference Carolinas contest against Pfeiffer University. Game time is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.
