VANCEBORO (AP) -- Authorities say two college-bound prep football players died in a wreck in southern Pitt County.
Multiple media outlets report 17-year-old Isaiah Yates of New Bern and 18-year-old Charles Elliott Jr. of Vanceboro died in the wreck on N.C. Highway 43.
Both were students at West Craven High School. The school's website says Yates had signed to play at Guilford College in Greensboro and Elliott had signed to play at UNC-Pembroke.
State troopers say Yates was behind the wheel when the car crossed the center line, and an oncoming vehicle hit their car in the passenger side.
Friends and family gathered Saturday afternoon at West Craven High school to remember the two teens. Principal Randy St. Clair said he knew everyone would go through a tough time in the days ahead.
