UMO: Trojan lacrosse teams claim road wins

BREVARD -- Tyler Feniello won 20 of 22 face-off attempts as the No. 11-ranked University of Mount Olive men's lacrosse team cruised past in-state rival Brevard College, 15-6, on Wednesday.
It was UMO's season opener.
Nico Shewey and Jacob Ball connected on back-to-back goals within a 40-second stretch to break a 1-1 tie and put the Trojans ahead for good. Thatcher Clark, Luke Dalman, Matt Shields and Ball combined to score four goals within a three-minute span to break open the game.
Shields punched in a game-high four goals. Ball dished out two assists.
Keeper Ross Bowman posted five saves between the pipes.
The Trojans (1-0 overall) entertain Rollins College on Sunday. Face-off is 1 p.m. at Amon Field.
Women's lacrosse
HICKORY -- Caity Hamilton and Riann Daziel scored goals within 45 seconds of each other, lifting the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team past in-state rival Lenoir-Rhyne, 9-5, on Wednesday.
Down 2-0, Daziel connected on two game-tying free position goals. L-RC moved back in front 4-2 before UMO's Claire Wigler closed the gap to 4-3 with 8:39 remaining before halftime.
The Trojan women seized their first lead, 5-4, on Daziel's goal from Alysha Kulka. Kulka drilled an unassisted goal into the net. However the Bears, again, pulled to within a single goal.
Daziel added two more goals and Brittany Barron capitalized on an extra-player opportunity to seal the outcome. Goalie Hannah Knight logged six saves.
No. 12-ranked Mount Olive (2-0 overall) visits Conference Carolinas foe Converse (S.C.) College on Saturday.
Men's volleyball
WILSON -- Peyton Schirman cranked out a match-and career-high 24 goals during University of Mount Olive's 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 18-25 loss to Conference Carolinas rival Barton on Wednesday evening.
Schirman recorded five digs defensively. Bret Rutledge contributed 10 and three digs. Mike Mann served two aces.
Jeff Yasalonis passed out 35 assists.
The Trojans (3-2 overall, 2-2 CC) return home Friday to face Belmont Abbey.
