PIKEVILLE -- Ian Best launched a half-court shot as the game ended.
The ball swished in the basket, and the Charles B. Aycock senior celebrated, but the shot didn't win the game or even tie the game.
The Golden Falcons fell 77-52 to Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference rival J.H. Rose on Tuesday evening.
"At first I was disappointed we lost on our senior night like this," Best said. "I wanted to go out with a bang on the last night I played at home, but at the end we just started having fun and just enjoying the last moments here on the court.
"My last shot, I made it at the buzzer. It felt real good."
The Golden Falcons trailed the Rampants, 32-10, at halftime.
Rose continued running down the court in transition and scoring on layups and 3-pointers. The Rampants led CBA, 51-28, going into the fourth quarter.
CBA senior Gabriel Parker assisted sophomore Eli Batts with a 3, and Parker sank a bucket and a 3-pointer of his own. Senior Keyshawn Cobb passed the ball to senior Tyrique Ford for a 3, and the Golden Falcons trailed Rose, 73-46.
Golden Falcons head coach Dave Elmore called a timeout with one minute remaining in regulation.
Ford lobbed the ball up for Best, but he missed the dunk.
"The coach (Elmore) called a timeout and drew up a plan to get the alley in, and I'm glad he (Best) made his last shot," said Ford said.
Cobb ended the game with 13 points. Best collected 11 points, and Ford added 10 points.
"I can't fault effort," Elmore said. "The effort was there, and they (Golden Falcons) were trying. They just couldn't knock down shots. It seemed early in the game, Rose was just knocking down every shot they put up.
"I knew they (Best and Ford) wanted to have fun. I tried to draw up a play right there for Ian to get a lob. I tried to give it to him, but it didn't quite work out."
Aycock (7-15 overall, 1-10 ECC) visits county rival Eastern Wayne on Friday.
