Sauls, Chastain combine to win three ECC 3A/4A individual titles

Charles B. Aycock's Zech Chastain emerged with two individual titles during the season-ending Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference championship meet contested at B.G. Darden Natatorium.

Chastain secured first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 57.09 seconds. He returned later in the night to post a meet-winning mark of 56.71 seconds in the 100 backstroke.

According to Golden Falcons head coach Linda Chastain, Zech did not lose an entire individual race all season.

CBA's Abby Sauls claimed the 500 free in 5:42.89 and posted a runner-up time of 2:09.23 in the 200 free.

Southern Wayne's Austin Edgecomb claimed third in the 200 free (2:10.88) and 500 free (6:08.24). Teammate Jalen Williams placed fourth overall (2:40.26) in the 200 individual medley (IM).

"So proud of my team tonight," SW alum and head coach Chad Davis said. "(It) has been over a month since we have had a meet. We have worked our butts off and it showed tonight with almost 100-percent best times. Austin strengthened his regional consideration times ... sits well in the 200 free, 500 free and 100 free.

"Jalen also performed a best time in the 200 IM. Also, tonight was the first night we were able to perform our 400 relay and we have a consideration time in it as well. (I'm) very proud of the hard work that has paid off."

The Saints' 400 free relay of Williams, Wuilmer Velasquez, Logan Robinson and Edgecomb touched the wall fifth in 4:45.41.

Yinhao Chen of Eastern Wayne secured third place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.46, and placed fifth in the 50 free (25.81). Noah Bernard seized sixth place in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.29).

On the girls' side, the Warriors' tandem of Genevieve Bernard and Madison Tallarida ended up ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 100 free. Teammate Faith Boyette captured sixth in the 500 free (7:31.68).

EW's foursome of Bernard, Paige Childers, Maddie Murphey and Tallarida wound up eighth in the 200 free relay. Tallarida grabbed sixth place overall in the 100 backstroke (1:24.31).

Boyette swam the opening leg on the Warriors' 400 free relay that wound up fifth overall in 5:22.42. She was joined by Emma Diemecke, Tanith Fortney and Childers.
