Girls' basketball

Wayne Country Day 40, Greenfield 37

* WILSON -- Lillian Freeman tallied a team-leading 19 points as Wayne Country Day turned back Greenfield, 40-37, in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference game Saturday evening.

Lexi Jeffreys posted 10 points.

The Chargers (6-15 overall, 1-2 CPIC) take on Pope John Paul Catholic HS on Tuesday.

Boys' basketball

Greenfield 77, Wayne Country Day 76

* WILSON -- Former Eastern Wayne Middle School standout Colby White drilled the nets for 45 points as Greenfield slipped past archrival Wayne Country Day, 77-76, in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Friday evening.

Jamal King led four Chargers in double figures with 28 points. Cole Atwood delivered a 14-point outing. DJ Waters and Jamal Forde each supplied 12 points.

WCDS had the ball with 10 seconds left, but missed a game-winning 3-point attempt as time expired. Head coach David Flowers said the teams played a "good game and Wayne Country Day is getting better every game."

The Chargers (13-12 overall, 1-3 CPIC) face league foe Pope John Paul Catholic HS on Tuesday. Flowers and his team gets a rematch against Greenfield - at home - next Friday.

Goldsboro Heat 63, Alamance 53

* Harman Kaler dropped in a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds during Goldsboro Heat's 63-53 triumph over Alamance in an NCHEAC east region contest Saturday evening.

Kaler also collected four steals.

Gavin Portela contributed 19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. Cameron Yarbrough and Joe Rasmussen provided eight points apiece.

Christian Yarbrough handed out five assists.

Goldsboro (8-7 overall, 7-4 NCHEAC East) entertains Wake Forest Lighthouse on Tuesday in Snow Hill.

JV

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Country Day 24, Greenfield 14 -- Lexi Jeffreys poured in eight points and the Chargers remained undefeated in 13 outings this season. Hayden Nielsen added six points. The teams meet again next Friday at WCDS.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 42, Alamance 36 -- Joe Rasmussen paced the Heat offense with 15 points and nine rebounds. Hayden Perry snagged 11 boards, including eight on the offensive end. Hayden Portela notched nine points. Christian Yarbrough, Ben Daniels and Metrell Wooten pulled down seven rebounds apiece. Goldsboro (4-8 overall) entertains Wake Forest on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Greenfield 70, Wayne Country Day 62 -- Marcus Metcalf sizzled the nets for 29 points, while teammate Jack Talton scored 12. The Chargers (15-5 overall) face Pope John Paul Catholic HS on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 52, Alamance 46 -- Hayden Portela supplied 20 points and Luke Parks chipped in 16 points for the Heat. Portela also logged six rebounds, six steals and six assists. Ben Daniels just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Heat (3-4) take on Wake Forest on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Greenfield 35, Wayne Country Day 23 -- Tanner Willman emerged as the Chargers' top scorer with nine points. Dylan Brown and Joey Democko registered six points apiece. WCDS (3-9 overall) gets a rematch with Greenfield next Friday.
