Trojan men, women sweep Belmont Abbey

MOUNT OLIVE -- Dominique Reed notched a double-double -- 18 points, 11 rebounds -- as the University of Mount Olive men's basketball team throttled in-state rival Belmont Abbey, 102-76, in Conference Carolinas play Tuesday evening.
The Trojans have scored a total of 194 points in their last two games.
Mount Olive broke away from an early one-point deficit as Jamaal Matin's steal and Dontrell Brite's layup capped a 14-1 run. The offensive surge pushed the Trojans ahead 23-11 and the Crusaders trailed by double digits the remainder of the game.
The Trojans shot 70 percent (21 of 30) in the first half.
Brite finished with 17 points and a game-high six assists. Mike Moore scored 14 points and Hart added 10. The Trojans owned a 38-28 edge on the boards and outscored the Crusaders 44-16 in the paint.
Mount Olive (11-7 overall, 6-4 CC) entertains North Greenville on Friday.
Women
MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive unleashed a 10-0, fourth-quarter run and cruised past in-state Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey, 80-59, on Tuesday evening.
Aerial Johnson started the decisive run with a layup. Shy'Lia Buie and Felicity Havens connected on back-to-back 3-pointers. Daria Simmons capped the offensive surge with a basket.
UMO led 72-55.
The Trojan women led 38-32 at halftime and outscored the Crusaders 42-27 in the second half.
Johnson paced Mount Olive with 19 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Ni'Ya Styles had 13 points, dished out six assists and picked the Crusaders for six teals. Haven scored a season-high 12 points and snared six rebounds.
UMO (9-8 overall, 7-4 CC) entertains North Greenville on Friday.
