Goldsboro led 47-24 after three quarters, but South Lenoir pulled to within 13 points with four minutes left in regulation.
"I told them (Cougars), 'We can't let up on defense'," said Goldsboro head basketball coach LaTina Bullock, whose team eventually defeated the Blue Devils, 61-44, in their Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference game at Norvell T. Lee Gym.
"We we're letting up on defense. We weren't getting back. We went into a triangle-and-two which kind of shut down 25 (Hailey West) and 23 (Hunter West), and they (Cougars) started getting lazy on defense. That's why they (Blue Devils) were able to get back within 13 points."
Bullock called a timeout at the 4:07 mark of the fourth quarter.
Goldsboro senior Tyona Moses drove the court for a layup. She assisted freshman McKayla Roberts on a basket. West drew a foul on a layup and converted three-point play.
Destiny Lucas scored on Khamryn Brown's assist. Moses drew a foul, swished the free throw and the Cougars ran away from that point. Moses ended the game with 29 points, including a 14 of 16 effort from the free throw line. Lucas added 13 points. Roberts had six points and 10 rebounds.
Hailey West had 11 points for South Lenoir. Hunter West and junior Keely Gates recorded nine points each.
Weather permitting, Goldsboro (8-6 overall, 2-1 ECC) plays host to Ayden-Grifton on Friday.
