UMO men knock off King (Tenn.), but Trojan women fall

MOUNT OLIVE -- Regionally-ranked King (Tenn.) University sliced a double-digit deficit to one point with eight minutes remaining, but University of Mount answered the challenge and claimed a 92-76 win in Conference Carolinas play Tuesday evening.
Dontrell Brite pumped in 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out seven assists during the Trojans' fifth conference win of the season. JaQuan Blount contributed 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a reserve role.
Jacque Brown knocked down 11 points.
Calvin Walker's 3-pointer pulled the Tornado to within 70-69 with nearly nine minutes remaining in regulation. UMO held King to a single field goal and two free throws down the stretch.
Mike Moore's two charity shots, John Wieland's 3-pointer and Mykel Moore's layup off Moore's steal gave the Trojans some breathing room. Tayon Gleaves' layup, 3-pointer, free throw and fast-break layup off Brite's assist all but sealed the outcome.
Mount Olive (10-7 overall, 5-4 CC) drained a season-high 15 three-pointers and collected 25 assists on 27 field goals.
King entered the game ranked No. 7 in the Southeast Region.
Women
MOUNT OLIVE -- Aerial Johnson logged her third consecutive double-double as University of Mount Olive dropped a 64-61 decision to Conference Carolinas foe King (Tenn.) College on Tuesday evening.
Johnson scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Trojans, who dipped to 8-8 overall and 6-4 against league opposition this season. Daria Simmons added 11 points, while Ni'Ya Styles provided 10 points and six assists.
Felicity Havens added six points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role.
UMO led 35-32 at halftime, but King gained a 43-37 advantage with an 11-0 run. Styles eventually tied the game at 49-49.
Down 61-59 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining, King scored the final five points on Arnelle Collins' layup, Amy Van Deventer's two free throws and another free throw.
The Trojans travel to Southern Wesleyan on Saturday.
