Cougar basketball equals total team effort.
Just ask Goldsboro head basketball coach Russell Stephens.
His team -- including the bench -- defeated South Lenoir, 69-48, in Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference play on Tuesday night.
"We played yesterday (against Orange) and didn't play with a sense of urgency," Stephens said. "I think tonight we did. Defensively, I was very pleased with the way we played. Defense kind of keyed our offense tonight.
"I got a big game out of Jyrek Robinson tonight, rebounding the ball, just being in the passing lane. I think he scored six or eight points. It was just a total team effort tonight.
"We had a couple of bigs step up. Tyzhaun Claude got his first dunk. Myron (Carmon) wanted to get his teammates involved, not really worrying about his offense tonight. He gave up a lot of shots he usually takes."
Goldsboro led 36-13 at halftime and never looked back.
Senior Kisheem Faison stole the ball at half court and drove to the basket for a layup to start the third quarter. Faison then assisted Robinson with a basket. Robinson grabbed a rebound and launched the ball to Claude for a two-handed dunk.
The Blue Devils (6-6 overall, 0-1 conference) trailed the Cougars, 55-25, to start fourth quarter action. South Lenoir senior Jonte Midgette swished a 3-pointer, but Carmon assisted Atkins with a 3 for the Cougars.
With five minutes left in regulation, Stephens switched out his starters with his bench. Senior Joshua Best made a layup, and junior Daryl Gaddis assisted junior Jamal Cox with a basket.
Blue Devils sophomore Hunter Weeks and junior Roger Monroe each buried a 3-pointer for South Lenoir with the outcome already decided.
Senior Jonte Midgette ended the game with 12 points. Junior Jordan Kennedy and sophomore Shykiem Wooten scored six points apiece.
Faison recorded 17 points. Carmon ended the game with two points and five assists. Atkins added seven points for the Cougars (15-1 overall, 3-0 ECC).
"(With) a conference game at home, you need to win if you're going after a conference championship," said Stephens, whose team plays host to Ayden-Grifton on Friday. "We definitely kept pace with everyone in the conference. We're actually at the top of the conference with this win at home tonight."
