UMO splits Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK -- Ni'Ya Styles scored the final nine points of the game and finished with 20 points overall as University of Mount Olive defeated in-state foe Lees-McRae, 69-65, on Tuesday evening.
Styles drained two free throws with six seconds left to seal the outcome and the Trojan women their second win of the season.
It was the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams.
Aerial Johnson collected a double-double -- 15 points, 10 rebounds. Shy'Lia Buie contributed 10 points, while Kiara Jones provided five points and a team-best 13 rebounds.
UMO returns to action Saturday at UNC Pembroke.
Men's basketball
BANNER ELK -- Lees-McRae closed the game on a 13-4 run and upended University of Mount Olive, 80-77, in the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams Tuesday evening.
The Trojans lost their fourth straight game.
Dominique Reed just missed a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds. Mike Moore collected 18 points and 11 rebounds. John Wieland pumped in a season-high 16 points -- all in the second half.
Dontrell Brite dished out six assists.
L-MC snapped a 17-game skid in the series.
Mount Olive (2-4 overall) is the guest of Augusta University on Sunday. It's a rematch of last year's opening-round game in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
