KENLY -- Rosewood launched its 2015-16 campaign on the mat with a non-conference sweep of Triton and North Johnston on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles captured nine individuals wins in a 54-30 triumph over short-handed Triton, which forfeited two weight classes. Rosewood collected 11 individual victories in a 54-30 decision over the Panthers, who lost two dual matches during a tri-meet at Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.
"After losing 15 seniors last year, I wasn't sure how this season would be, but we couldn't be more pleased with the effort and intensity from the guys tonight," RHS head coach Bill Edmundson said. "Standout performances came tonight from Louis Tortual, Joey Behrend and Blake Dean. These guys took their lumps last year and are getting their time to shine as starters this year.
"Incoming freshmen Jordan Todd and Timothy Decatur-Luker also sparked the Eagles' lower weight classes. We as coaches are so proud of the way the upperclassmen have stepped into leadership roles and are setting such a great example for the younger wrestlers."
Michael Zagone, Colby Hooks, Reid Amodeo, Todd, Merritt Long, Seth Finney, Hunter Weeks, returning starter Dylan Melgar and returning letter-winner Blake Dean each emerged victorious against Triton.
Zagone, Amodeo, Finney, Weeks, Melgar, Tanner Smith, Tortual, Thomas, Joey Behrend, Decatur-Luker and defending state heavyweight champion Kaleb Taylor each won against North Johnston.
Rosewood (2-0 overall) returns to action Saturday in the annual Feud in the Forest, which is hosted by Pine Forest High School.
