Wingate men upset No. 5-ranked Mount Olive

WINGATE -- No. 5-ranked University of Mount Olive fell from the unbeaten ranks with an 84-68, non-conference loss to in-region foe Wingate University on Tuesday afternoon.
Preseason All-American Dontrell Brite pumped in 21 points for the Trojans, who saw their regular-season win streak snapped at 19. JaQuan Blount added 14 points in a game televised on ESPN3. Blount and Brite combined for five 3-pointers and 10 rebounds.
Wingate controlled the boards 39-26.
UMO led 40-31 in the early stages of the second half. The Bulldogs moved in front 43-42, and the teams battled through three ties and three lead changes.
Wingate seized the lead with a 12-2 run and led 65-54 with just under eight minutes to play. Grant Dickinson and returning starter Mike Moore each fouled out as the Bulldogs' advantage grew to 18 points.
The Trojans (2-1 overall) return home Friday to face Virginia State in the 50th annual Pickle Classic. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena. Barton College (2-1) meets UNC Pembroke in the opener.
