UMO battles in 45-Second Classic (men)/SAC-CC Challenge (women)

WILSON -- JaQuan Blount pumped in 18 first-half points as nationally-ranked University of Mount Olive turned back Young-Harris, 80-66, on day two of the annual 45-Second Classic inside Wilson Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Blount finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Trojans, who extended the regular-season win streak to 19. Dominique Reed dropped in 22 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.

Dontrell Brite contributed 15 points, while Mike Moore supplied 13 points and seven rebounds.

Young-Harris trimmed a double-digit deficit to nine with 13:21 left in the second half. Reed and Brite scored four points apiece during a 10-2 run and the Trojans' advantage never dropped below 14 points.

Moore's 3-pointer gave UMO its biggest lead, 78-57, with 2:29 to go.

Reed knocked down 17 points as the Trojans rolled past USC-Aiken 81-64 in opening-round play of the Classic. Moore contributed a double-double -- 14 points, 10 rebounds -- as UMO held a 35-point lead over the Pacers at halftime.

The Trojans shot 13 of 17 from 3-point range during the first 20 minutes.

Brite recorded 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Blount contributed six points, six assists and six rebounds. John Wieland knocked down two 3-pointers.

UMO had 23 team assists on 27 field goals.

The Trojans (2-0 overall) return home Friday for opening-round play against Virginia State in the 50th annual Pickle Classic. The Trojans face UNC Pembroke on Saturday.

Women's basketball

CHARLOTTE -- Aerial Johnson posted her second double-double -- 23 points, 12 rebounds -- in as many nights during University of Mount Olive's 78-47 romp over Queens University on day two of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge.

Jada Bacchus provided a double-double -- 13 points, 11 rebounds. Senior Ana Zjacic just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Ni'Ya Styles and Shy'Lia Buie contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Guard Rachel Fehl dished out seven assists.

UMO broke the game open with a 14-0 fourth-quarter run.

The Trojan women dominated the boards 56-33 and had 19 team assists on 32 made field goals.

Johnson notched her first-ever "20-20" game in her collegiate career and came within two blocked shots of the fifth triple-double in UMO women's basketball history. She logged 21 points, 20 rebounds and eight blocked shots in a 76-67 loss to in-state foe Catawba.

It was the season opener for both teams.

The Trojans played their first-ever regular-season game under the new NCAA format of four 10-minute quarters, which replaced the original format of two 20-minute halves which were implemented nearly four decades ago.

Jada Bacchus provided 10 points and picked Catawba for five steals. The Trojans shot 19 of 27 at the free throw, but missed all eight 3-point attempts.

UMO owned a 50-41 edge on the boards.

The Trojan women (1-1 overall) return home Saturday to face Virginia Union during the 50th annual Pickle Classic. Tip-off is 1 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
