ERWIN -- Jamal King logged first varsity double-double -- 24 points, 11 rebounds -- as Wayne Country Day fell to Cape Fear Christian, 71-57, in the championship game of the Cape Fear Academy Senior Classic.
Tony Townsend added 12 points for the Chargers, who trailed by nine after three quarters and trimmed the deficit to two possessions in the fourth. But coach David Flowers' club started fouling to preserve time and CFCA converted at the free throw line.
"Cape Fear is easily the biggest lineup we will face this year with six players standing 6-foot-7 or better," Flowers said.
The Chargers opened the Classic with a 65-50 triumph over Carolina 1-A Conference member Neuse Charter. Jamal Forde just missed a double-double with a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds.
King contributed 12 points.
WCDS entered halftime tied at 21-21, but put up 22 points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
The Chargers (2-1 overall) continue play Tuesday at The Oakwood School.
