WCDS completes fall season with awards ceremony

Wayne Country Day capped an historical fall campaign with a season-ending awards ceremony held in the gymnasium Sunday evening.
One day earlier, the Chargers "three-peated" as the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team girls' tennis state champions. The boys' soccer team claimed its first-ever state crown in program history after runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2006.
The WCDS girls' cross country team secured runner-up accolades in the season-ending NCISAA 1-A meet on Friday afternoon.
Here are the awards breakdown:
* Varsity girls' tennis: Leadership Award -- Margaux Pope; Most Improved -- Eliza Eagles; Coaches Award -- Jennifer Potts; Most Valuable Players -- Gianna Democko; NCISAA All-State -- Democko, Potts, Eagles and Ally Willman.
* Varsity boys' soccer: Senior Award -- Patrick Hall, Matt Kierski, Tony Townsend, Charlie Roethling, Jacob Magera, Parker Smith, Lee McDonald and Hunter Hawkins; Team Player Award -- Noah Adkins; CPIC All-Conference -- Hall, Kierski, Hunter Bryson, Luis Lopez and Ben Cohen; CPIC Coach of the Year -- Steve Ellis; CPIC Player of the Year -- Hall; NCISAA All-State -- Hall, Bryson, Cohen, Lopez.
* Varsity volleyball: Most Improved -- Kate Thompson; Coaches Award -- Kaitlyn Daniels; MVP -- DeKiya Thomas; CPIC All-Conference -- Thomas; CPIC All-Conference honorable mention -- Lillian Freeman, Hannah Neal.
* Boys' cross country: Coaches Award -- Suraj Patel; Best Time Award -- Zander Pittman; NCISAA All-State -- Pittman.
* Girls' cross country: Coaches Award -- Hiwot Shaw; Best Time Award -- Abby Skinner; NCISAA All-State -- Janae Jones, Abby Skinner.
* JV girls' tennis: Most Improved -- Nancy Chen; Caoches Award -- Hannah McKeithan; MVP -- Marti Rose.
* JV boys' soccer: Team Dedication Award -- Will Fickling; Most Improved -- Bash Attiah; Team Player Award -- Marquise Newell; Team Player Award -- David Gurley.
* JV volleyball: Most Improved -- Grayson Jeffreys; Coaches Award -- Madison Britton; MVP -- Katie Strickland.
* Middle school volleyball: Coaches Award -- Cate Eagle; Improved Offense Award -- Lexi Jeffreys; Improved Defense Award -- Elizabeth Johnston.
