Faria's "golden goal" lifts Trojan men

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Freshman Stefan Faria tallied the "golden goal" five minutes into the first overtime, lifting University of Mount Olive to a 1-0 victory over Conference Carolinas rival Emmanuel College on Saturday.

The Trojans (8-8-0 overall, 6-4-0 CC) earned the No. 4 seed for the season-ending conference tournament, and plays host to fifth-seeded King (Tenn.) University on Tuesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.

UMO received a corner kick in the 94th minute. Fernando Tacuri served the ball into the box from the right corner and the ball bent to Sean Lockett in front of the goal. Lockett's header clanged off of the crossbar, but Faria put home the rebound.

The game-winning goal snapped UMO's six-match losing streak.

Trojan goalie Nick Bernsdorf logged two saves between the pipes.

Women's soccer

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Christine Rocchio recorded her first-ever natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) in University of Mount Olive's 3-0 conquest of Emmanuel College on the Conference Carolinas scene Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans' victory, coupled with Converse's double-overtime triumph over King, created a tie for third between UMO and King. The Trojans (9-5-2 overall, 7-2-2 CC) won the regular-season meeting and claimed the No. 3 seed for the season-ending conference.

Rocchio scored in the second, 18th and 39th minutes. Nichole Poppe handed out two assists. Rocchio's third goal was a successful penalty-kick conversion. It was the first hat trick in program history since Lindsey Stanley accomplished the feat Oct. 18, 2011 against in-state foe Chowan University.

UMO keeper Stephanie McCoy recorded two saves.

Weather permitting, the Trojans entertain sixth-seeded Pfeiffer University in opening-round play of the CC tournament today. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.

Women's volleyball

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Alysha Burnett and Samantha Winfield combined for 23 digs defensively in University of Mount Olive's 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 loss to Conference Carolinas foe Emmanuel College.

Burnett and Sydney Kanupp led the Trojan women with five kills apiece. Britni Johnson and Burnett combined to serve three aces.

Mount Olive (4-19 overall, 3-10 CC) concludes regular-season play at home Tuesday against Barton College. First serve is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
