Hunter Hawkins notched the eventual game-winning goal on an assist from Jack Talton and state-ranked Wayne Country Day rolled to a 9-0, mercy-rule decision over Northwood Temple on Tuesday afternoon.

Hunter Bryson logged two goals and three assists for the Chargers, who posted their sixth consecutive shutout. Jack Zhao, Lee McDonald, goalie Patrick Hall, Matt Kierski and Tony Townsend provided one goal apiece.

Luis Lopez, Noah Adkins and Townsend each dished out one assist.

Nine seniors played in their regular-season home finale -- Hall, Kierski, Townsend, Charlie Roethling, Jacob Magera, Parker Smith, McDonald, Hawkins and Kris Cooley. The group helped lead the Chargers to their second Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference championship in the past three years.

"It was a nice way for our senior class to finish the regular season," WCDS head coach Steve Ellis said. "The team played well and got the victory that was needed early in the first half. It was a nice way to finish off the evening with the seniors being handed the conference trophy.

"They have all worked hard for me since I arrived here as they entered as freshmen on the team. They will be missed next year, but they have helped guide the underclassmen as the program moves forward."

Wayne Country Day (18-2-1 overall) is ranked No. 2 in the latest Eurosport (soccer) Scoreboard 1-A poll. The Chargers are expected to receive a top-four seed and opening-round bye in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

The 12-team field was unveiled later today.
