PIKEVILLE -- Casie Belom and Cassidy Coerver needed less than a hour to beat their respective opponent, and their Charles B. Aycock teammates soon followed suit in a 9-0 white-washing of West Carteret during opening-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.
Belom and Coerver combined to lose just five games.
Top-seeded Sabrina Johnson, second-seeded Kassidy Pitchford, fifth-seeded Meredith Jones and sixth-seeded Grayson Lane each claimed a straight-set singles win. Jones did not lose a game.
Pitchford-Coerver, Johnson-Belom and Jones-Lane each triumphed in doubles play. Jones-Lane outlasted the Patriots' tandem of Abigail Sproul-Ellie Rose 10-8 at the No. 3 spot.
"The ones and twos dominated their doubles matches like the true conference champs they are," first-year CBA head coach Gene Stancil said. "The number three doubles hit a snag with Meredith playing injured, but they were still victorious sealing the shutout."
Aycock (16-4 overall) returns to action Friday in the NCHSAA east regionals at Wilson. Pitchford-Coerver and Belom-Johnson will participate in doubles.
