• For the sixth time in the past 71⁄2 weeks, Spring Creek will hit the road for a football game.

The next opponent is Hobbton on Monday night in Newton Grove. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

The Carolina 1-A Conference rivals have combined to lose their last seven games, but two of Spring Creek's defeats have come against Chocowinity Southside and East Carteret -- which are each ranked in the Associated Press Class 1-A  poll.

Each setback has been a learning tool, according to first-year Gators' quarterback Jessie Casper. He and his teammates have battled against players who are more mature, bigger, stronger and faster.

"(SC Coach Aaron Sanders) said their team is young, just like us ... we're alike in a lot of ways," Casper said of Hobbton. "We've got to execute, can't have too many turnovers. (We) can't make stupid mistakes, just got to play your position and fight."

Once the game ends, Spring Creek (2-4 overall, 0-1 Carolina) will get a much-needed nine-day rest to heal some bumps and bruises, and recover from a grueling early-season road swing.

The Gators' next home game is Oct. 16 against Princeton.

"If we stay focused and execute ... everybody has been serious at practice because they know the last four weeks have been tough," Casper said. "We've got to hit the weight room, get bigger. The guys on this team have talent, but we've just been out-matched on size ... just everywhere."
