SALEMBURG -- Lakewood's defense shut down Spring Creek's offense during a 42-8 victory on a miserable, rainy Friday night.
It was the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams.
The Leopards held the Gators to 28 yards of total offense. Jamal Davis led Spring Creek's running game with six yards on five carries. Quarterback Jessie Casper completed six passes for 50 yards. Najee Young and Jyrique Wooten combined for three receptions that totaled 39 yards.
"They were really athletic," SC head coach Aaron Sanders said. "With the conditions, we obviously didn't match up with them at all. They're big and physical and can run up front. They're a good football team."
Sophomore linebacker Spencer Jameson emerged as the Gators' defensive leader with eight tackles. Malik Sutton and Xavion Garcia had five stops apiece.
Spring Creek (2-5 overall, 0-1 CC) visits Hobbton next Friday. Lakewood (4-2, 1-0) is the guest of North Duplin.
