PIKEVILLE -- Doubt, uncertainty and ridicule couldn't stop Charles B. Aycock quarterback Jake Flowers.

Flowers was determined to get a win.

"We started off right. We struggled at first, but everybody beared down for a big win," said Flowers, who threw for a career-high 308 yards in the Golden Falcons' 43-20 win over North Lenoir on Friday evening.

The junior quarterback threw a 63-yard pass to junior wide receiver Chandler Matthews for a touchdown in the first quarter, and threw a 56-yard pass to Matthews in the fourth. Matthews ended the night with 130 receiving yards on three catches.

Tyrique Ford, a junior running back, received a 36-yard touchdown pass from Flowers in the fourth quarter. Luke Frederick, a sophomore wide receiver, caught a 39-yard touchdown with three minutes remaining in the game.

"I didn't have to work too hard," Flowers smiled.

Flowers' four touchdown passes were also a career high.

"(I) can't say enough about our quarterback," C.B. Aycock head coach Steve Brooks said. "He knows his performance last week wasn't great. He is an extension of me."

Though Flowers found success in his third game as a starter, the Hawks made a push in the fourth quarter to get to within 22-20. North Lenoir went for a two-point conversion to tie the game, but the Golden Falcons' defensive line barricaded the end zone.

The Hawks had a chance to gain yardage with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, but they fumbled the ball. The Golden Falcons recovered and Ford eventually scored a touchdown.

In the post-game huddle, North Lenoir head coach Kimbo Brown urged his team to remember the 22-20 score.

"We played hard, but we ran out of gas," Brown said. "We're building. We've just got to keep trudging."

Stephon Swinson and Kethan Morris, junior running backs for North Lenoir, trudged throughout the entire game.

Swinson caught a kickoff from Aycock's kicker Seth Harrison at the 15-yard line and returned it for a touchdown. He sliced through Aycock's defense for a two-point conversion in the first quarter. Morris carried the ball 22 yards for the Hawks' final touchdown of the game.

The Golden Falcons improved to 2-1 overall this season, while the Hawks fell to 0-3.
