PIKEVILLE -- Humidity.
A heat index near triple digits.
No breeze.
Just miserable conditions.
Despite the "dog days of summer" afternoon, three Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference teams battled the weather, and the men's race turned exciting during the final 800 meters on the Charles B. Aycock 5k course.
J.H. Rose's Johnathan Timothy pulled away from the Golden Falcons' Joseph Mooneyham and crossed the line in 18 minutes, 32 seconds. Mooneyham posted personal-best mark of 18:45 on his home course.
D.H. Conley teammates Matt Weaver (20:08) and Lucas Wiley (20:19) placed third and fourth, respectively. Rose's Noah Elliott secured fifth overall in 20:25.
Aycock got scoring performances from Deshawn Owens (7th, 20:57), John Parrish (9th, 21:01), Hunter Crane (10th, 21:13) and Mitch Castorena (21:15).
Conley won the meet with 33 points, two less than CBA. Rose tallied 57 points.
On the girls' side, CBA's Tara Price placed fifth in 26:15. Teammates Sara Gregory (10th, 26:23), McKenzie Stewart (20th, 28:33), Morgan Casey (24th, 30:17) and Georgia Parnell (31:05) completed the team's scoring.
Conley posted 20 points, followed by Rose (53) and CBA (68).
