GREENVILLE -- Tony Townsend notched the eventual game-winning goal in the opening half as Wayne Country Day throttled The Oakwood School, 6-1, in non-conference play Thursday afternoon.
Charlie Roethling assisted on Thompson's goal and converted a penalty kick to push the Chargers' advantage to 3-1 at halftime.
Hunter Bryson collected two goals, the second coming on an assist from Nick Fletcher. Matt Kierski and Jack Zhao each scored one goal. Noah Adkins, Luis Lopez and Hayes Gerrard each provided one assist.
"We started a little slow, but the (Oakwood) goal was against the run of play," WCDS head coach Steve Ellis said. "It shocked us for a few minutes before we settled again and dominated the rest of the game. We should have had a couple more on the board with the chances we created.
"(A) good performance from the team and we showed great character to see the game out. We look to improve on a few things next week before we play again."
The Chargers (4-1-0 overall) entertain Community Christian next Tuesday.
