PIKEVILLE -- Once Charles B. Aycock puts two halves of soccer together, it could become an even more dangerous team.
Spring Creek found out first-hand Thursday evening.
Chris Grieve broke a scoreless draw at intermission with two second-half strikes in a 4-1, non-conference triumph on the Hardy Talton Stadium pitch. Freshman Coe Jordan picked up his fifth assist of the season for the Golden Falcons, who concluded the opening week of regular-season play with a 3-0-0 worksheet.
"We changed to a 4-3-3 system that involves winning the ball high and not sitting so deep," CBA coach Byron Adkins said. "We have the players that can play that system this year. We've scored 12 goals in three games, so it looks really good so far."
Hunter Williams and Reece Middlekauff punched in one goal apiece for CBA. Zach Zacharzuk, who suffered a left-knee injury; Dallen Edwards, Sean Doulin and Jordan dished out one assist apiece.
Returning starter Gustavo Avalos tallied an unassisted goal in the 68th minute for the Gators.
Spring Creek (0-1-0) used its speed to generate attacks on goal and ripped off three shots during the first 3 1/2 minutes after kickoff. Two bounced just wide of the post, while a third shot outside the 18 sailed over the crossbar.
"The first 22 minutes, we were playing fast and then we started going down," Jordan said. "(We) weren't high pressing (the ball). When we step, we wouldn't go fully and they would counter us.
"They were fast."
Grieve hit the post with a right-footed shot in the 29th minute. Spring Creek just missed converting an indirect free kick in the 35th minute after Aycock keeper Skylar Landers received a back pass from a teammate.
The county rivals entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Barely six minutes into the second half, Grieve put Aycock on the board off an assist Zacharzuk, who beat an SC defender to a loose ball near the sideline.
Grieve's mark sparked a three-goal outburst over a 16-minute period. Williams, with his back to the goal, headed in a throw-in from Dallen Edwards in the 59th minute.
"An old-school play," Adkins said. "We used that at Eastern Wayne where we'd put a big man on the near post. We did it when Garrett Davis was here and with Tim Naughton.
"Just try to flick it on goal."
Middlekauff headed in Aycock's third goal on a corner kick from Sean Doulin. Grieve capped the scoring in the 76th minute on Jordan's assist out of the flow of play.
"Two or three (long) balls and they make it," first-year SC head coach Carlos Borda said. "I got an excellent sweeper, Juan Hurtado, but he cannot be by himself doing the whole stuff.
"When we saw we were three goals behind, we couldn't recover."
Aycock owned a 20-12 edge in shots and 8-2 advantage in corners. Landers and fellow goalie Hampton Tilghman combined for three saves between the posts.
The Golden Falcons improved to 4-0-3 all-time against the Gators and 47-11-4 against county opposition since 2006.
