Defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state 1-A champion Hickory Christian claimed the inaugural Charger Cup with a 2-0 victory over Wayne Country Day on Saturday afternoon.
Hickory outscored the opposition 20-0 in the three-day event.
"It was a tough game but we did really well in the second half, " WCDS head coach Steve Ellis said. "We started slow against a good team and got punished. (The) second half we dominated and the opposing coach said his team was hanging on in the second half. It gives us a few things to work on going forward, but overall it was a great weekend for our school."
The host Chargers compiled a 2-1 record that included a 9-0 triumph over Neuse Christian on Friday afternoon. Benjamin Cohen recorded his first-ever hat trick (three goals) and dished out an assist.
Luis Lopez supplied two goals and three assists. Noah Adkins contributed one goal and two assists. WCDS also got offensive production from Tony Townsend (goal), Hunter Bryson (goal, assist), Kris Cooley (goal) and Lee McDonald (assist).
"It was a good win for us today to continue the momentum from yesterday," said Ellis, whose team defeated county rival Wayne Christian on Thursday.
"We had to deal with two starters not playing in this game due to injuries, but the lads that came in played well."
Wayne Country Day entertains Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Tuesday. Kickoff is 5:15 p.m.
