Prep volleyball: Wayne Christian takes 2nd in Charger Cup

Setters Emily Wells and Kasey Norris combined for 96 assists as Wayne Christian finished runner-up to Halifax Academy in the inaugural Charger Cup contested at Wayne Country Day.
Halifax won 25-19, 22-25, 25-17.
The Eagles, directed by head coach Rick Moore, concluded pool play 1-2 on Friday. They fell to Halifax Academy, but earned a rematch by eliminating Neuse Christian.
Toward the end of the second set in the finals, Wayne Christian lost sophomore libero Holly Gurley to an injury. Halifax pulled away to claim the championship. Gurley concluded the two-day event with 12 service aces and 50 digs.
Wayne Christian received quality production from Hannah Sladick (41 kills, 19 blocks and 50 digs), Sarah Sawyer (12 kills, 45 digs) and Hope Shock with 22 kills. Ashley Harrellson contributed 17 aces and 26 digs.
Mercy Wright posted 6 1/2 blocks and nine kills. Other contributors were Brook Slusher (eight kills) and Kaylin Darden (two kills).
Wayne Christian (4-4 overall) plays host to county foe Goldsboro High on Tuesday. First serve is 6 p.m. at Clifford Gymnatorium.
