MVPs announced at annual Wayne Christian spring sports ceremony

Wayne Christian athletics director Roger Longwell announced Wednesday evening that the Eagles will field an eight-man junior varsity football team next season.

Prospective players in grades six through nine are eligible. Longwell said he hopes that Wayne Christian can develop a varsity program within a two-year period and participate on the 11-man level. The Eagles have been accepted into the 8-man Colonial Carolina Conference which includes the following schools -- Halifax Academy, Hobgood Academy, Lawrence Academy, Southampton (Va.), Northeast, Community Christian, Cary Christian, Grace Christian, Parrott, Rocky Mount Academy, St. David's and Bethel Christian.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards in six sports. Reagan Taylor and Nick Easom each received the female and male Eagle Athletic Award, respectively. Tanner Rose earned the Outstanding Senior Athletic Award and baseball standout Trey Hinton received the Outstanding Academic Athletic Award.

Five Most Valuable Players were recognized in varsity competition -- Ted Suggs (baseball), Matt Jackson and Graham Fussell (boys' tenns), Blake Floars (boys' golf) and Chandler King (track and field). Suggs earned Carolina Christian 1-A Conference player-of-the-year honors in baseball and claimed a spot on the 2015 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A all-state team.

Floars plans to continue his golf career at Campbell University.

The awards breakdown:

* Varsity baseball: Coach's Award -- Rose, Hunter Burt and Brandon Price; Christian Leadership -- Easom.

* Varsity tennis: Most Improved -- Richard Grady; Coach's Award -- Daniel Rodgerson; Christian Leadership -- Dylan Schreffler.

* Varsity golf: Most Improved -- Ethan McKenzie; Coach's Award -- Drake Wise and Miciah Singletary; Christian Leadership -- Logan Jackson.

* Track and field: Boys' Most Improved -- Cody Easom; Girls' Most Improved -- Mercy Wright; Christian Leadership -- Matt Coulter.

* Middle school baseball: Most Improved -- Dalton King; Coach's Award -- Justin Sherman, Jaxon Bauer; Christian Leadership -- Noah O'Hara; MVP -- Will White.

* Middle school softball: Most Improved -- Rachel Barnes; Coach's Award -- Hayli Verme; Christian Leadership -- Victoria Harrell; Co-MVPs -- Leah Boswell, Brianna Verne.
