PIKEVILLE -- Dribbling down the left side of the field, Brennan Dove was in a good position to shoot.
She was in a better position to cross the ball to a teammate.
Truthfully, she doesn't know what she did.
But the ball ended up in the back of the net. She had kicked a laser toward the right corner where Megan Mozingo was waiting to head it into the goal. It deflected off Sarina Lancaster's hands and into the net.
It was the second in Eastern Wayne's eventual 7-0 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference rival Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday evening.
So, was it a pass or a shot?
"I'm not really sure," Brennan Dove said.
Either way, Dove ran back to midfield for play to reset, having a good time laughing and joking with Mozingo.
"That was a crazy goal. It was literally top corner," Mozingo said. "I was there but I might have been offsides. I don't know. But it was great."
It didn't take long to see where this one was headed.
The Warriors scored 20 seconds into the match on a solid individual effort from freshman Claire Molloy, who beat two Golden Falcons defenders and then finished the goal.
"It always helps to get a goal 20 seconds in," Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner said. "It's a little unfortunate for them, there was some miscommunication between the back and the keeper. Then they had to sort of press harder being down so early, they had to have a win in this game."
Scoring was put on hold for the next 35 minutes before Dove punched in her goal. And, just in case she felt like she had snubbed Mozingo for that goal, she found the senior forward a minute later on a through ball that Mozingo tapped into the net.
Mozingo, in one of her first games playing as a forward in a few weeks, scored two of the Warriors' five second-half goals to secure a hat trick. One came on a penalty kick and the other on an all-out hustle play beating Aycock's sweeper Gracie Parrott to the ball and slide-kicking it into the far corner.
"That's just speed. That's just hustle and athleticism," Wagner said.
Dove also had a hat trick as she punched in a goal on a rebound and headed in a throw-in from Madison Tallarida.
Mozingo, Molloy and Dove made life difficult for the Aycock defense with their speed -- something they have been doing all year against teams. Their forwards were consistently able to dribble around defenders on the outside and then get the ball back into the box with skillful dribbling or short passes.
"I think we're a pretty fast team anyways and when they weren't really ready for what we were going to do we were able to get around them and then cut back in or pass to someone else," Mozingo said.
Aycock didn't register a shot on goal until the 65th minute and only managed two in the game. The Golden Falcons also had two free kicks from scoring distances, but each attempt sailed high.
"The defense did a great job making sure we shut them out and didn't allow many shots," Brennan Dove said.
