Eight county athletes return home as ECC 3A-4A track champs

WINTERVILLE -- Eight Wayne County athletes walked away with Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference track and field individual championships in tow after the season-ending meet contested at South Central High School.
Eastern Wayne's Romello Hamilton claimed the 400-meter dash in 50.54 seconds and won the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 21/2 inches. Teammate Josh Bartz took the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 10.1 seconds.
The Warriors' Natasha Johnson won the long jump with a leap of 18-3. Teammate Deyja Middleton took first in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 2 inches.
Southern Wayne's D'jimon Ward seized the 110-meter hurdles gold medal in 15.94 seconds.
Defending state champion Courtney Warner, who recently signed with East Carolina, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Aycock junior Joseph Mooneyham emerged as the 1,600- and 3,200-meter champ. The Golden Falcons' Alston Best won the discus with a throw of 123 feet, 3 inches.
