WILSON -- Ashton McGee scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch and Bobby Hampton recorded 12 strikeouts during Charles B. Aycock's 3-1 triumph over Rosewood during the Tobs Classic contested at historic Fleming Stadium.
Scoreless through 21/2 innings, Lenoir-Rhyne signee Hank Smitherman drew a one-out walk. McGee followed with a bases-clearing RBI single, and later scored on an errant pitch.
Aycock led 2-0.
Rosewood pulled to within 2-1 in the top half of the sixth on Khalil Warren's RBI single. The Eagles' outfield surrendered the Golden Falcons' third run when it misplayed Bryce Anders' fly ball that allowed Brandon Palmer to score.
Hampton, who has signed with Appalachian State, held Rosewood to one hit and yielded one walk during a five-inning stint. Kyle Davis earned the save with two innings of two-hit, two-strikeout relief.
Jordan Gurley and Ethan Chapin each had a hit for Rosewood.
Gurley endured the mound loss in 21/3 innings of work. Chapin tossed 21/3 innings, while Mason White went 11/3 innings. The trio combined for four strikeouts, four walks and two earned runs on just two hits.
Aycock (1-0 overall) returns home Wednesday for a non-conference game against North Lenoir. Rosewood (0-1) is scheduled to host defending 2-A state champion Midway on Monday.
