SEVEN SPRINGS -- Emily Ricks and Charley Cox were a two-woman wrecking crew Princeton defeated Spring Creek, 34-31, in a Carolina 1-A Conference game at "The Swamp."
The two combined for 30 points -- Cox had 11 and Ricks had 19 -- as the Bulldogs swept the regular-season series.
A defensive battle all night, the game came down to a tying 3-point attempt from Spring Creek's Destiny Sutton that was well long. Sutton finished with nine points off the bench and shared team-high scoring honors with starting guard Amber Buchan for the team lead.
They couldn't stop Princeton's two main scoring options, with Ricks playing especially well down the stretch.
"The last two or three games, my mid-range jumpers have been there," Ricks said. "Before, they were really flat, so that's what I've been trying to work on. Repetition in practice [has been key]. Just keep shooting and don't think about it too much."
The emergence of another scoring threat who happens to be a freshman is a dream come true for Princeton head Marty Gurganus.
"Emily stepped up and hit some big shots for us tonight," he said. "As a freshman, that transition from middle school to varsity is such a huge gap. It took her a while to get a feel for it, but the last three games she has played so well.
"I think she's starting to get a hold of it. She's hitting at key moments when we really need her."
