Warrior matmen compete in Rumble on the Mat

DEEP RUN -- Eastern Wayne finished 2-3 in the Rumble on the Mat contested inside Munn Gymnasium on the South Lenoir campus Saturday.
The Warriors (7-16 overall) defeated the host Blue Devils, 41-40, and eased past county foe Southern Wayne, 41-36. East Carteret, Wilson Fike and Pamlico County each handed EW a loss in the muti-team dual.
Kyler Sprague, Justice Johnson, Andre Smith, Andre Collie, heavyweight Bryan Wooten, Jykell McLamb and Cainen Miller each claimed an individual win against South Lenoir. Miller's forfeit at 126 capped the Warriors' comeback from a 10-point deficit heading into the final individual bouts.
Eastern Wayne fell behind 12-0 against Southern Wayne, but answered with six consecutive wins by Johnson, John Amon, Jordan Wooten, Smith, Collie and Bryan Wooten.
The Warriors led 29-12.
The teams traded victories the rest of the match. McLamb and Sprague prevailed for Eastern Wayne.
Southern Wayne's individual winners were Mikal Leach, Daquan Dickens, Davis Caudill, Tyreke Davis, Zach Buff and Kimari Johnson.
