BANNER ELK -- Freshman Tayon Gleaves collected a career-high 17 points as No. 18-ranked University of Mount Olive handed in-state Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae an 80-69 defeat Sunday afternoon.

Dontrell Brite pumped in a team-best 20 points for the Trojans, who rebounded from a nationally-televised loss to King (Tenn.) University on Saturday. Jordan McCain contributed a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Mike Moore just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.

L-MC eventually shaved a double-digit deficit to four points just before halftime. John Wieland's 3-pointer helped UMO claim a 41-34 advantage at the break.

Dominique Reed's jumper and Gleaves' 3-pointer allowed the Trojans to pull away midway through the second half. UMO led by as many as 17 points against the Bobcats, who fell to 5-6 overall and 1-4 against league opposition this season.

The Trojans (11-2, 5-1) return home Wednesday against Conference Carolinas newcomer Southern Wesleyan. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

BANNER ELK -- Arieal Johnson's basket with 44 seconds to play and a crucial lane violation propelled University of Mount Olive past Lees-McRae, 56-53, on the Conference Carolinas women's basketball scene Sunday afternoon.

Johnson posted a double-double, 21 points and career-high 18 rebounds, in the Trojans' third road win of the season. Ty Wallace provided her second double-double (15 points, 14 rebounds) in as many days.

Gabby Griffin added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

UMO snapped a three-game skid.

Johnson drained a pair of buckets to give the Trojans single-possession leads at 52-50 and 54-52. Down by two, the Bobcats' Kabrina Truesdale hit the first of two free throws to close the gap to 54-53, but L-MC committed a lane violation on Truesdale's next attempt that swished the net.

Shy'lia Buie was fouled immediately and knocked down both free throws to make it 56-53. The Bobcats didn't answer in a contest that included 12 ties and 14 lead changes.

Mount Olive (4-8 overall, 2-4 CC) returns home Wednesday for a date against league newcomer Southern Wesleyan. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
