Rebels' Quintanilla finishes state runner-up in 1A singles

CARY -- North Duplin junior Julissa Quintanilla finished state runner-up in the singles portion of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A girls' tennis championships.
Quintanilla began her title quest with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over North Stokes' Abby Williams in quarterfinal-round play. She handed Voyager's Kinsey Blount a 6-2, 6-2 defeat in the semifinals.
In the finals, Bishop McGuinness' Morgan Auger defeated Quintanilla 6-1, 6-2.
Quintanilla and Blount will meet again today in third-round play of the NCHSAA dual-team playoffs. First serve is 4 p.m. on the John Walker Neal courts at the University of Mount Olive.

BURLINGTON -- Charles B. Aycock senior Ashton Walker stumbled in the quarterfinals of the NCHSAA 3-A tennis championships contested at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Walker upended Cardinal Gibbons' Kate Freed 6-3, 6-0 in opening-round play. She fell 6-0, 6-1 to Sarah Jiang of Cox Mill in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Aycock's tandem of Casie Belom-Cassidy Coerver had their season end with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Fayetteville Terry Sanford's tandem of Huda McGraw-Emma Edge.
Walker, Belom and Coerver helped lead the Golden Falcons to a 16-2 record and the program's 31st regular-season conference title this fall.
