WILSON -- Three Charles B. Aycock players extended their respective tennis seasons at least one more week with runner-up efforts in the 2014 N.C. High School Athletic Class 3-A eastern regional contested at Barton College.
Top-seeded Ashton Walker dropped just five games in her first three matches before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Wilson Hunt's Taylor Love in the championship match. Love avenged a loss to Walker in last year's regional final.
Each punched their tickets to the state tournament, which begins Friday in Burlington. They'll be joined by Cleveland's Victoria Dixon and Topsail's Carmen Jordan.
Southern Wayne's Hope Jones, a two-time regional qualifier, opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Swansboro's Jayden Davis. Jones fell 6-0, 6-0 to Love in quarterfinal-round play.
The Golden Falcons' tandem of Casie Belom-Cassidy Coerver earned a state tournament berth with a runner-up finish doubles. The duo defeated Swansboros' doubles of Nhi Pham-Caroline Provost 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals. They lost 6-0, 6-3 to Rocky Mount's tandem of Chandler Brice-Eliza Fike in the title match.
Eastern Wayne's Elizabeth Sutton-Brennan Dove, which won the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference championship, bounced back from an opening-set loss to defeat Jacksonville's Amy Wangerin-Maddy MacCauley 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Sutton-Dove dropped a 6-0, 5-7, 3-6 decision to Fike's Liz Short-Elery Williams in the quarterfinals.
