Goldsboro nearly let a 13-point advantage slip away in the third set, but held on and eventually beat Eastern Carolina 2-A foe Ayden-Grifton 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12 on Tuesday night.
The Cougars honored seniors Maddie Jara and Alexus Davis before the game.
Davis, Jara, Matti Rose Lyon and Becka Pittard all had double-doubles in the match. Davis had 13 kills and 12 digs with four aces. Pittard mashed 13 kills and had 17 digs. Jara notched 10 aces and 19 digs and Matti Rose Lyon had 15 assists and 12 digs.
"We worked on some things defensively that we knew Ayden-Grifton was going to do and that helped us out big time," GHS coach TJ Lancaster said.
"This was one that we really needed to help our playoff seeding," Lancaster said. "So it was nice to get it."
The Cougars (12-6 overall, 4-4 CC) travel to North Lenoir on Thursday.
