WARSAW -- Jaquan Williams accounted for two touchdowns during James Kenan's 28-7 triumph over Rosewood in a Carolina 1-A Conference football game at contested at Bill Taylor Field on Friday evening.
Williams grinded out a 7-yard TD run and hauled in a 32-yard scoring pass from sophomore quarterback Ken Avent III. Avent III was held to a season-low 77 passing yards, but added 51 yards rushing -- including a 30-yard touchdown -- in the Tigers' fifth win of the season.
Khalil Savage paced Kenan's ground game with 80 yards and one TD.
John Brooks emerged as the defensive leader with eight tackles, while Ishnel Georges contributed seven stops. Donta Mason and Juan Hooper posted six tackles apiece.
Junior Marquail Almontaser scored the Eagles' lone touchdown -- a second-quarter 18-yard pass from Cameron Helt. The score tied the game at 7-7 with more than 11 minutes to go before halftime.
Kenan responded with 21 unanswered points.
Helt ended the night 10 of 19 for 122 yards. Mike Woodard grinded out a hard-earned 42 yards on 19 carries.
"I'm extremely proud of the way we competed against one of the best football teams in the state," RHS head coach Robert Britt said. "We have to eliminate negative plays that are a result of our mistakes. We had minus-50 yards on bad snaps or mishandled snaps.
"However, I'm extremely excited about the things we are doing well. We will continue to get better."
Rosewood (3-4, 1-1 CC) entertains Lakewood next Friday, while James Kenan (5-1, 2-0) is the guest of county rival North Duplin. Each game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
Lakewood 35, North Duplin 20
* SALEMBURG -- Dillon Kinlock rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns during Lakewood's 35-20 triumph over Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin on a rainy Friday evening.
Emiliano Mora led the Rebels' attack with a career-high 114 yards passing and 106 rushing. The junior quarterback completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Brock, who accounted for 104 yards of total offense on the night.
Daquan Goodman tallied touchdowns on runs of 6 and 10 yards. Senior Brion Kornegay added 57 yards on the ground.
North Duplin held a 402-296 advantage in total offensive yards.
The teams combined for 384 yards on 32 penalties.
The Rebels (3-3, 0-1 CC) entertain county rival and state-ranked James Kenan next Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at H.E. Grubbs Field in Calypso.
Hobbton 22, Spring Creek 21
* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Marque Surles scored the game-winning touchdown with 2:25 remaining, and Hobbton upended Spring Creek, 22-21, in Carolina 1-A Conference play Friday evening.
It was the Gators' homecoming.
"A tough one to swallow," SC head coach Aaron Sanders said. "It was a heartbreaker. We've played them tight the last two years. It was almost the exact opposite opposite (of last year) that went in our favor and this year it didn't."
Senior Tre Hammonds rambled for a season-high 153 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Backfield mate Gary Williams provided 76 yards on 13 totes.
Senior quarterback Logan Miller and Jordan Hicks connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to put the Gators ahead 21-15 at halftime.
"The kids had a good night, they played well," Sanders said. "Overall we are improving and we're continuing to improve. That's what you've got to do at this point in the season."
Hobbton won a conference game for the first time since Oct. 12, 2012 when it defeated Heide Trask in Tri-County 1-A Conference play. The Wildcats (2-4 overall, 1-1 CC) entertains state-ranked Princeton next Friday.
The Gators (1-5, 0-2) visit Princeton on Oct. 17.
